Sustainability and sustainable development emerged in the late 1980s, defined as meeting present needs without compromising future generations. The term “sustainable” comes from “sustinere,” meaning to hold on. Global focus has since shifted towards Sustainable Development, with initiatives like Agenda MDGs and Agenda SDGs setting achievable goals and strategies for progress.
In this module, we elaborate on the historical background and development of sustainability as a concept, case studies, explanations, challenges, and arguments.
